Got Chili?
Yes we do…about 10 gallons of it! OMP participated in its first ever Sertoma Chili Cook-off on Saturday February 18th at the Springfield Expo Center. David Jackson’ s chili represented us this year, and by all accounts, David’s chili rocked! We received 77 People’s Choice votes for the best-in-show, and from what I hear some thought our chili was some of the best in the house.
The artist-formerly-known-as WaterHikers offered up the awesome display booth they used at last years’ cook-off (complete with J racks and a place for to mount a TV) but we missed our window and we had to come up with a booth display at the 13th hour. Luckily for us, Curtis Claybaker and VP Paul came through in crunch time making us a structure where we could display our kayaks and gear. Jason and Jennifer Haskins provided some great pictures of our members paddling the rivers and even some roll session pics. Christy Claybaker finished it off with a string of Coleman lantern lights.
When we saw people bringing in kitchen ranges to cook with, we thought we might be in over our heads…considering we were just using a couple of hot plates to do our cooking. In the end, we did come away with a better understanding of what works best to do this kind of event. Still, our team persevered, and we were able to have chili ready when the doors opened. Some of our members served while others talked to folks about OMP. We had great exposure and many folks seemed interested to learn more about the club.
In all, there were about 15 paddlers who volunteered at the cook-off, and I know everyone who participated had a great time. Thanks to all of you for making our first Sertoma appearance a great success.
